At Willow Burn Hospice volunteers are the heart of our community. Whether you're a student, retired, working part-time, or looking to re-enter the workforce, volunteering with us offers a chance to make a meaningful impact. Our volunteers gain confidence, learn new skills, and become part of a supportive community, all while making a real difference in the lives of those we care for.

Karen Tarn's Experience as a volunteer in the Willows Café
"Last Thursday, I spent my volunteering day for work in the Willows Café at Willow Burn Hospice. Willow Burn is a small hospice in Lanchester, County Durham, providing end-of-life care, holistic day care, inpatient and family support, and bereavement counselling services.

Why did I choose Willow Burn? Unfortunately, I lost a lovely neighbour on 25th December 2024. They spent their last few weeks at Willow Burn, and when I visited, I was so impressed with the whole setup. It was such a calm place, and all bedrooms looked out over the most amazing grounds.

So, I headed off to the Willows Café and got stuck into the washing up for the first few hours. Chef Hazel then got me to finish off decorating a cake. I can't have done that bad a job, as it was in the display cabinet shortly after.

During the busiest time in the café, I cleared tables, took food orders out and stocked up the drinks cabinet. The café is a hub for the local community, not just for people visiting family or friends. It was lovely to see that people were coming every week for the great food on offer. I still need to try the amazing cheese scones (my favourite), so I will have to go back and try one.

I met Will O’Burn that day, who very kindly agreed to have a photo.

I can't thank the other volunteers enough for looking after me on the day. Big shout out to Hazel (Chef), Yvonne, and Lynne. You all work so hard, and yes, my back was breaking when I got home that night (but in a good way).

If you live near Durham, this is a great place to volunteer."
