Our Family Support Team provides a range of services to anyone suffering from life limiting illness, their families and their carers. It is provided from diagnosis, pre-death, post-death and is ongoing throughout the bereavement process. This support is offered not only to our In-Patient Unit and Day Care patients, but we also accept referrals from hospitals, G.P.s, Macmillan Cancer Care, schools, colleges and other charities.
Those who are affected by a diagnosis of a life-limiting or terminal illness may have the ability to support each other without the need of outside help. However, our Family Support Service offers a confidential and free service which includes ‘one-to-one’, couple or family counselling. Our Family Support Worker helps to assess patient and family needs, providing: advice and information, sign posting to other relevant services and practical assistance. She also provides the unique service of offering interim support to anyone who is on our waiting list for counselling, and who are unable to be seen immediately.
Our bereavement support begins by providing a regular ‘Service of Remembrance’, which offers the opportunity to family and friends (and hospice staff) to say goodbye to someone they cared for deeply, and to light a candle in their memory.
On-going bereavement support is provided by ‘one-to-one’ counselling and bereavement support groups, which are held in the hospice and also held in the community. Upon completion of at least six ‘one-to-one’ bereavement counselling sessions, or six sessions at one of our Bereavement Support Groups, people may be invited to join ‘The Willow Burn Bereavement Buddies’, which is held in the hospice on Wednesday afternoons. ‘The Buddies’ is a ‘moving on group’ which is run by the members, and aims to provide social activities and on-going support to each other.
The Willow Burn Hospice Family Support Team works tirelessly to provide an individual service to people who may be undergoing the most difficult time of their lives.
