Role: Counsellor

Location: Willow Burn Hospice, Lanchester

Salary: £14.00 p/h

Hours and Times: 22.5 hours p/w

Responsible to: Clinical Lead

Job Purpose

To provide support and counselling to adults, young people, and children within one-to-one and group sessions, in a conducive environment within the hospice to meet the needs of the clients.  This role will involve networking and working as part of a multi-disciplinary team. The role also significantly involves supporting the family services team through related supervisory, administrative and other tasks.

Key Responsibilities

To provide one-to-one counselling and group support to families, including adults, young people or children and to maintain a caseload of clients.

To facilitate monthly group supervisions for the Family Support team.

To assist team members in the various administrative tasks related to the work of the Family Support Team.

To carry out any administrative work necessary to support the counsellor role/family support worker.

To assist in developing, facilitating, and delivering, training workshops for hospice staff and volunteers and external agencies.

To network with other organisations providing and seeking advice and guidance when required, around the specialist subject of bereavement and loss to assist with referral/signposting

To assist in the day to day management of family support volunteers, as directed by the Clinical Lead, providing supervisory support where necessary and by ensuring effective communication throughout the team.

To contribute effectively to the family services team. To assist in the development and facilitation of various groups, relevant to the service, designed to meet the needs e.g. children’s bereavement, cancer support, adult bereavement.

To undertake assessments of clients in order to clearly define their emotional and psychological support needs are met by the service provided in line with our referral criteria and so that appropriate referrals/signposting can be made to other agencies.

To participate in mandatory training including Fire Safety, Equality, Diversity & Human Rights, Conflict Resolution, Prevent Radicalisation, Health & Safety, Basic Life Support/First Aid, Infection control L1, Mental Capacity and in both Safeguarding Adults and Safeguarding Children L2, and to have a full understanding of Willow Burn safeguarding policies and procedures as well as County Durham Local Authority adult and children safeguarding policies and procedures.

To attend team meetings and mandatory training, as well as any other training necessary to achieve the fulfilment of your personal/professional requirements.

To maintain professional competence and ensure that practice is evidence based by keeping up to date with current research and developments.

To arrange and  attend external counselling supervision for no less than 1.5 hours per calendar month in line with BACP guidelines.

To assist, when requested, in the formulation of policies and procedures for the family support service ensuring that they meet the Care Quality Commission Standards and the national bereavement standards.

To ensure that accurate records are maintained at all times, to comply with professional requirements and to ensure statistical data and records of activity are completed, as well as assisting in service evaluation and audits.

To assist the Clinical Lead in the recruitment of volunteers to support the service and provide advice and training for them.

To work as part of the multi-disciplinary team attending multi-professional meetings where necessary.

To raise awareness of the philosophy of the palliative and bereavement care of  Willow Burn Hospice to the general public, through presentations to external agencies and during themed events such as ‘Dying Matters Week’

To maintain confidentiality and professional standards in accordance with service policies and procedures

To maintain professional standards of counselling practice and to work within the guidelines of the BACP Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions

To participate in clinical governance activities

To participate in any other tasks as required dependent upon skills and experience.
