Nigels 50th Year Challenge!

Elddis Transport have been supporting Willow Burn Hospice for 10 years and this year Nigel Cook, MD has set himself a huge personal challenge! Here is his story, in his words.

Many of you may know that in 2010 I stupidly committed, as a 40 something, unfit and over weight businessman, to run 10 half marathons in 10 countries in under 8 months. In May 2011 I crossed the finishing line of the Prague Half Marathon to complete the challenge, a lot fitter, a stone lighter and almost £25,000 raised for Willow Burn Hospice. Well, what you may not know is the challenge never finished, 5 ½ years later I have now completed 44 half marathons including running in 17 countries. There are now only 5 countries in Western Europe I have not ran a half marathon within. Well today is the first day of my 50th year on the planet (49 today), so over the next 12 months on the journey to my big 5-0 birthday, I intend to challenge myself further and again hopefully raise more money for this great charity. So here is the challenge for the following year: –
• To have run 50 half marathons before my 50th birthday
• To have run a half marathon in every country in Western Europe (Germany, Austria, Denmark, Wales and Luxembourg still to complete)
• Complete the Coast to Coast bike ride from Whitehaven to North Shields • Climb 50 Wainwrights in the Lake District with Victoria (her idea as she wanted to get involved and also potentially see me sometime during the year!)
• Finish in January 18 by going back to the Artic Circle and running my 50th Half Marathon, which is ran at the height of winter, in the dark, on ice at around -25 degrees’ c temperature

After a few glasses of wine again this seemed like a good idea, not sure I will feel the same in 12 months’ time. All of the costs of getting to and entering these events has been covered by myself, so everything I raise will go to the charity. There will be a justgiving page set up, which I will email details after I have completed the first half marathon of the year (Vienna, Austria in March).

Well Done Nigel and good luck from everyone at Willow Burn Hospice!
